2 professors ‘settled in Gulf,’ still on rolls in Pulwama college

Two newly appointed assistant professors at Government Degree College Pulwama are allegedly settled overseas but drawing salaries from the college in nexus with the college management.

A source inside the college told Greater Kashmir that two assistant professors of department of Chemistry are playing hide and seek for last nine months. “They manage leave from the college on one excuse or other and are actually working in the Gulf,” a source said, adding that they have managed to get their leaves extended through their relatives. “Both joined as fresh appointees in the college in June and August last year but received regular leaves during the probation period which is illegal.”

“The leaves were allowed to both on medical grounds which as per legal guidelines cannot be granted during first year probation tenure. This clearly depicts a clear nexus between the college management and these two professors,” said an employee from the department of Chemistry.

The source said that instead of taking action against the duo, college management is releasing their salaries.

Meanwhile, the students in the department of Chemistry are suffering for want of faculty members. A third semester student said that he last saw one of these two professors on 23 November 2017 and since then he is outside the country. He further said that the teachers left the college 15 days before winter break and this year they are yet to resume their duties.

When this reporter met Bashir Ahmad Mir, principal of the college, he denied that the two assistant professors were getting salaries for the period they remain absent.

“We paid them only for that period when they were actually present in the college. I had no information about this issue and of late I came to know about this and immediately informed higher education department.”

“The assistant professors are on leave for me and I don’t know where they are,” he said. “The maximum punishment which can be given to them was to register dies non, extra-ordinary leave and that has been registered in service books of both of them.”

The principal showed attendance sheets and service books to this reporter to prove his point but a source from the college said these documents were forged by college management on Tuesday morning. The principal however refused to share other documents including leaves submitted by the two and salary statements with this reporter.
