3 soldiers missing after avalanche hits army post in Gurez

Three soldiers went missing late last night after an avalanche hit an army forward post in Bagtore area of Gurez in Bandipora district following heavy snowfall, an official said on Tuesday.

The soldiers belong to army’s 36 Rashtriya Rifles unit stationed at Nani forward post in Bagtore, he said

“The avalanche hit the post at around 11 pm,” he said.

He said that the rescue operation is on.

“Though snow has stopped, the rescue team is facing difficulties in tracing the missing soldiers due to heavy accumulation of snow in the area since Sunday night,” he said.

The missing soldiers were identified as lance-naik MN Pramanik, rifleman Shiv Singh and rifleman Moorthy N.

Meanwhile, the army’s Srinagar-based spokesman colonel Rajesh Kalia said that two soldiers slipped down a slope in Naugam area of Kupwara district and three soldiers went missing from a forward post in Kanzalwan area in Gurez Bandipora district during heavy snowfall in the past 24 hours. 

“Search and rescue operations are underway,” he said.

Earlier, an army porter slipped to death on Monday near Kilshey village in Tulail tehsil of Bandipora after the area witnessed heavy snowfall.

Meanwhile, the district administration Bandipora issued an advisory especially for Gurez and Tulail tehsils of the district, asking people to stay indoors and not to venture out in avalanche-prone areas.
