The District Magistrate (DM) Budgam, Shahbaz Ahmad Mirza has approved detention of four timber smugglers under Public Safety Act (PSA).
As per the PSA orders issued by the DM on the basis of reports submitted by the Divisional Forest Officer Pir Panjal forest division, the accused booked under the law belong to the different areas of the district.
The dossier details of all the four persons read that they have been involved in causing damage to the forests. The PSA orders of all the accused read that they were detained under the PSA to prevent them from acting in a manner which is prejudicial to the preservation of the forest wealth.
People from different areas of the districts, including those living adjoining to the forest areas have appreciated the move by the district authorities. They said the move will act as deterrent against timber smuggling and help prevent damages to the forest and thus add to the measures for preservation of the green gold. “We are hopeful the authorities will continue with the drive against the timber smugglers in future as well,” said a local.
