Forest department freed over 400 kanals from the cultivation of cannabis (Bhang, Charas) in the upper reaches of Lolab belt bordering Bandipora district.
Sources said that a drug mafia had encroached upon hundreds of kanals of forest land in the region to undertake cultivation of the banned crop.
Earlier, Conservator of Forests, North Circle, Irfan Rasool had constituted a team of officers to conduct anti-bhang operation after receiving reports of its cultivation in the region. The drive was carried out today with a heavy contingent of officials from Forest department, Forest Protection Force and Police.
The grass cutters and other tools were used during the operation, which was supervised by Zahid Mogul DFO Kamraj Forest Division.
As per an official statement, cannabis was destroyed at Trimukh top in pockets such as Bumus, Dab, Kakarpati, etc. and around 400 Kanals of forest land was freed from bhang cultivation in a joint operation in which more than 200 officials participated.
