51 percent government schools record below 50 percent result in Kashmir

There is not much to rejoice for the school education department as 51 percent of the government higher secondary schools have recorded below 50 percent results in the class 12th examinations. As per the figures produced by the JK Board of School Education (BOSE), students from 295 government higher secondary schools in Kashmir had appeared in the exams out of which 151 institutions have produced below 50 percent results. The statistics of poor performing schools has thrown up a major challenge for the government to plug the loopholes in the education sector.

The poor performing schools include six higher secondary schools with below twenty percent results besides one each school with below 10 and zero percent result in the class 12th examination.

As many as 69982 candidates were enrolled for the examination out of which 36227 candidates have been declared as qualified with the overall pass percentage of 51.76 percent.

As per the figures, the number of poor performing schools has increased from 22 in 2017 annual exams to 151 schools this year. “The increase in the number of poor performing schools is a cause of worry for the department. The grey areas must be identified and efforts must be made to overcome the issues,” an official said, wishing not to be named.

As many as 10 higher secondary schools have produced 50 percent results in the class 12 exams

In the Tehsil-wise analysis, Tanghdar has hit the bottom as only 23 percent students have qualified the class 12th exams. The pass percentage of students in Gurez has been recorded as 25 percent while as the pass percentage of Bandipora Tehsil has remained at 38.25 percent. Only 40 percent students have qualified the exams in Sumbal Tehsil.

Already reported by Greater Kashmir, a survey conducted by the education department last year had revealed that poor attendance of students, dearth of subject-specific teachers and lack of infrastructure at secondary and senior secondary level were the reason for poor performance of students from government schools.

The survey was conducted to ascertain the reasons behind poor performance of schools in class 10 and 12 exams. “The report was submitted to the administrative department to suggest measures to address the grey areas in such schools.
