7 out of 12 education zones headless in Anantnag

Seven out of the 12 educational zones in southern Kashmir’s Anantnag district are headless, hampering the overall functioning of the education department.

Among the headless zones are Anantnag (for 1 year now),Achabal (3 years), Shangus (3 months), Srigufwara (1 year), Qazigund (3months), Mattan and Verinag (1 month).

The post of Vailoo zone, which was lying vacant from pastone year was, however, filled last week only.

“The absence of these administrative posts is not onlyhampering the academic affairs of the schools but the administrative affairs aswell,” an official posted with the educational department said.

He said either the ZEOs of other zones are holdingadditional charge or else headmasters or Zonal Education and Planning Officers(ZEPOs) are running the affairs.

“Since the ZEOs or principals of higher secondary schoolsholding additional charge of headless zones remains over busy with theassignments of their own offices they hardly get time to visit the zones theyare holding additional charge of. So it is either ZEPOs or senior clerks whoare calling the shots in these headless zones,” an official said.

For instance, zone Srigufwara has been in news for last onemonth as the teachers and parents allege that the concerned ZEPO has messed upeverything including academics and administrative affairs.

“The tussle between clerks, teachers and ZEPO whoactually is a headmaster has badly affected the functioning of the zone,”he said.

The said zone is without ZEO from the past eight months.

“The authorities have failed to fill the post evens as thereare dozens of senior high school Headmasters of ZEO grade,” an official said.

Director School Education, Muhmmad Younis Maik, could not becontacted despite repeated attempts.
