Two youth, who were abducted by suspected militants, in Kulgam district on Tuesday, were released by the gunmen on late Wednesday evening in a “moribund condition.” One of them succumbed to his injuries in a Srinagar hospital late in the night.

Arif Sofi of Khudwani and Mehraj Ahmed Dar of Hawoora village were picked from their homes last night and were missing since then.

A family member told Greater Kashmir that a few villagers spotted Arif Sofi in an unconscious state near Moman village and rushed him to Qaimoh hospital from where he was referred to SMHS hospital Srinagar. “He succumbed to his injuries late in the night,” the family member added.

Another youth Mehraj Dar was also rushed to the hospital but his condition is said to be stable.

A source said that the deceased youth was working as an over ground worker for Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfit when Lashkar commander Abu Qasim was active in south Kashmir. Qasim was killed in a gun battle at Bugam village in Kulgam district in October 2015.

In the recent past, dozens of people have been abducted by militants on suspicion of being informers. While several of them were set free after warning, a few of them were shot at and injured or killed. Videos in which some of them admit to informing on militants have been shared on social media also.
