‘Address frequent traffic jam issue of Pattan’

The commuters from north Kashmir Tuesday urged the administration to address the issue of frequent traffic jams that often occur at Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The traffic jams at Pattan give a tough time to frequent travellers on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway and the worst affected are patients who had appointment with the doctor at any Srinagar hospital.

“Recently, I missed an appointment with a doctor at Srinagar due to the massive traffic jam. I reached two hours late and could not meet the doctor who arrived from Delhi,” said Ishfaq Ahmad of Sopore.

The frequent traffic jams at Pattan have become a norm over the last few decades.

The narrow road at Pattan market is often considered a reason for frequent traffic jams.

The peak hours, during morning and evening, are the worst time for the commuters and most of the time even policemen are unable to control the traffic jam.

Though the Baramulla district administration in the past advocated road widening at Pattan and favoured construction of a bypass for the Pattan market, so far, there has been no headway in this direction.

The stalemate over the issue has irked the locals as well as the business community who believe that if a bypass is developed it would be a big relief for the entire population of north Kashmir.

“The Baramulla district administration has shown inclination for the construction of a bypass at Pattan. Even various delegations of Pattan who had met the Baramulla district administration at several occasions were promised the bypass but despite passage of several years, nothing has been done. This shows the authorities are not serious in providing relief to the people of north Kashmir,” said Muhammad Ibrahim, a civil society member of Pattan, Baramulla.
