Expressing serious concern over under-utilization of funds allocated for upliftment of tribal population in the State, Governor’s Advisor , Khurshid Ahmed Ganai, Friday issued directions to the Tribal Affairs department to accelerate spending under its different schemes of the state and central governments.

The Advisor said the schemes envisaged for development oftribal population should show discernible change on ground so that they get accessto key services like education, health, roads, jobs, agriculture and alliedsectors.

The Advisor made these observations while reviewing thefunctioning of the Tribal Affairs Department. Secretary Tribal Affairs, AbdulMajeed Bhat, Director Tribal Affairs, Mushtaq Ahmad and other senior officersof the department attended the meeting.

Urging for a big push to achieve earmarked targets undervarious schemes, the Advisor observed that enhanced spending in core sectorslike education, health, dairying, sheep husbandry and animal husbandry, skilldevelopment and traditional sectors like agriculture and horticulture willprovide a much needed level playing field to the tribal people and immenselybenefit in scaling up their standard of living. “Tribal population constitutesnearly 12 per cent of the total population in the State. The holisticdevelopment of the State would be difficult if the Tribal population continuesto lag behind in key indicators.”

Flagging the issue of unspent balance of Rs.104 crore revalidatedfor the year 2019-20 under centrally-sponsored schemes as an area of graveconcern.
