People in Shamsipora village of Anantnag protested for the second consecutive day on Friday against the establishment of an army camp in the village.

The army’s counterinsurgency force Rashtitya Rifles has started taking over nearly 10 hectares of grazing land and playfield in the village.

Local legislator Abdul Majid Bhat (Larmi) raised the issue in the Assembly yesterday.

Scores of villagers today again assembled at the deputy commissioner’s office in Anantnag and demanded immediate removal of the camp.

They were shouting anti-government slogans. They also threatened to intensify the agitation if the army camp is not removed immediately

“The occupied land is significant for farmers and the youth for sports activities. The villagers have spent Rs 15 lakh on the stadium. However, the establishment of the camp not only will hamper sports activities but our daily life too,” a protester said.

Meanwhile, independent legislator and MLA Langate Engineer Rashid also joined the protests and after listening to the locals met deputy commissioner Anantnag to apprise him about the issue.

The commissioner later assured the villagers that he has spoken to the higher authorities and the camp might not be established.
