Army officer among two injured in ongoing Shopian gunfight

Two army men, including an officer, were wounded in an ongoing gunfight with the militants in Kundalan village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday.

Reports said that two army soldiers, including a Junior Commissioned Officer, were injured during initial exchange of fire with the militants.

Both the injured were evacuated to army’s 92 base hospital in Badamibagh Srinagar for treatment.

An official said that a gunfight broke out after a joint party of army’s 34 RR, Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF launched searches in Kundalan following inputs about the presence of militants.

As the forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants, believed to be two in number, opened fire. The forces retaliated, triggering a gunfight.

Soon after the gunfight, youth took to streets and pelted the forces with stones to disrupt the anti-militant operation.

The forces fire tear gas and pellets to disperse them, triggering further clashes.
