Army porter killed in avalanche, another injured in firing

An army porter was killed when a snow avalanche hit him along the line of control in Uri sector of Baramulla district Friday, police said.

“Shakeel Ahmad son of Feroz Ahmad, resident of Nawa Uri, was critically injured in the incident. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The slain porter was working with army’s 4-Madras regiment,” an official said.

Meanwhile, a local man working as an army porter received injuries in firing on the line of control in Kalal area of Nowshera in Poonch district.

The injured has been identified as Surjeet Kumar son of Ashok Kumar resident of Deeing village of Kalal, Nowshera.

He was working in a forward location of LoC in Kalal where cross border firing with small arms took place on Friday morning. The injured porter is presently under treatment in local hospital and his condition is stated to be stable.
