Army provides 35 lakhs to families of porters

Army on Tuesday said that it has compensated the family members of the porters who died in Keran in Kupwara district and Gurez Valley in Bandipora district.

In a statement army’s Srinagar based spokesman said, “The army distributed compensation amounting to approximately Rs 35 lakhs to the next of kin of three porters, late Jafar Ahmed Sheikh of Dardpora, Karalpora, late Gulam Muhammad Kasana of Quil Maqum, Bandipora and late Ghulam Muhammad Khan of Sidi Kilsai who laid down their lives while serving with the army. Also, another porter Ajaz Ahmed Khoja of Pharkian, Karalpora who sustained serious injuries leading to disability was also given due compensation.”

   

He said the cheques were distributed by the General Officer Commanding  Vajr division to the next of kin at Kupwara. 

Speaking on the occasion, the GOC said, “Porters working for the army are part of the extended family and the army will always look after the families of the deceased and disabled porters who have served the nation.”
