Authorities clarify

Authorities involved in execution of Jahangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover Wednesday sought to clarify rumours on safety of the structure.

“Two girders were erected during the night of 30th and 31st January 2018 after getting the power shedding from PDD. During the day while strengthening of the girders on the piers was going on and two of the girders had been tied and strengthening process completed, an earthquake shook Srinagar city and third girder which was in the process of permanent strengthening fell down from the pier,” reads the report submitted by project monitoring consultancy, a copy which lies with Greater Kashmir.

The communication addressed to director ERA, vide reference number 23-34-99047/01-2018/18400-18405, further reads:  “There was no loss of life nor was there any injury to any one working there. The report is submitted for information (sic).”

Director ERA Satish Razdan told Greater Kashmir that it was a minor incident and “it is not unusual during these constructions.”

“We have already taken precautionary measures to avoid any eventuality. Traffic movement had been closed in 2016 on this route. The unfixed girder has fallen down. There is no damage to the structure or the original project under execution,” Razdan added.

“Sometimes steels sheets or other material fall down. These things are expected (during constructions). That is why we had pressed for closure of traffic movement on the route,” he said.
