Bad roads give tough time to locals

Several roads in Hajin Township of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district are in a dilapidated condition from last eight years due to the negligence of successive governments.

Locals told Greater Kashmir that all the roads including main Bandipora-Hajin road and inner links of Hajin are in shambles as the administration has failed to maintain them for last 8 years.

“We have to face a lot of inconvenience owing to the dilapidated condition of roads in the main town. The successive regimes have failed to upgrade them. There has been no macadamization of roads including main Bandipora-Hajin road from last eight years,” said Gowhar Mir, a local resident.

Locals said that last year authorities carried out some patchwork on Bandipora-Hajin road but its condition is same as was eight years ago. “The authorities carried out minor patchwork and left that mid-way. The road was not macadamized hence the condition of the road became worse. The road is dotted with potholes which speaks volumes about the tall claims of the government,” the residents said.

Locals said that inner road links of Hajin town including that of Mir Mohalla, Bon Mohalla, Syed Mohalla, Banger Mohalla and Danger Mohalla are in a very bad condition, thereby making people suffer immensely.

“The roads are dotted with potholes and when it rains they are filled with water and we have to face problems on these roads. There is also no proper drainage system which makes walking on these roads more difficult, mostly during the rainy season,” they said.

They said that despite repeated pleas to the concerned authorities, the roads have not been upgraded since the past many years. The locals made a fervent appeal to the Governor to personally look into the matter and help resolve their problems.

When contacted, additional deputy commissioner Bandipora, Zahoor Ahmad, told Greater Kashmir that the upgradation of roads in Hajin town was in progress but due to the recent snowfall it was halted. “Work on upgradation of roads in Hajin would be resumed soon,” he added.
