Bad roads in Handwara pester pedestrians, locals

Residents of Handwara accused the authorities of neglecting the roads in the area subjecting the people to immense difficulties.

All the roads connecting scores of villages through various routes with Handwara town are in a shambles, the locals said.

They said the roads have developed potholes and deep ditches all across “with some so wide and deep as to cause damage to the vehicles running over.”

“The tall claims of the authorities on development of the roads fall flat in our village where the people suffer immensely for want of good roads,” said Rafiq Ahmad of Zachaldara.

The Handwara-Byepass, Handwara to Magam, Handwara to Mawer, Handwara to Kupwara, Handwara to Kokroosa and Handwara to Sopore roads are in shambles. Besides, the condition of the inner link roads in the town is no different, locals complained.

“We staged protests a number of times against the dilapidated condition of roads but to no avail,” rued Shamem Ahmed, a local.

The locals said that due to the bad roads, the commuters particularly the school going children and patients are suffering a lot.

“Often when we take the patients to the hospitals, they face lot of difficulties and at times it becomes difficult to take them to the hospitals,” locals said.

Locals appealed to the governor administration to look into the issue and direct the authorities concerned to immediately repair and upgrade the roads so that the movement of the people is eased.

When contacted Executive Engineer, Roads and Buildings Department, Handwara Division Farooq Ahmad said they were planning to start macadamization of the roads from 15 May. “Presently the temperatures are low. If they pick up, we will start the work from 15 May,” he added.
