BANDIPORA MINOR’S RAPE|Students continue protest, seek capital punishment for rapist

Students continued to hold protests in the campuses on Tuesday against rape of a three-year-old girl of Sumbal area of Bandipora district, amid the growing clamor for capital punishment to the accused.

Massive protests erupted at Women’s College here against theshocking incident. An eyewitness said the students came out of their classesand assembled in the campus to stage a protest demonstration.

   

They were demanding stern action against the accused. Theprotests remains confined to the campus.

The student protests also rocked Kashmir University (KU).Hundreds of students of different departments, under the banner of KashmirUniversity Students Union, (KUSU) assembled inside the campus to register theirprotest.

The raised slogans against rape accused and demanded capitalpunishment for him.

“Such incidents are completely unacceptable in our society.There should be a death sentence for such crimes,” said a protesting student.

The students also urged to people not to politicise theshocking crime. “We hope justice is served in this shocking case,” said anotherstudent.

Students also carried out a peaceful protest march inBoniyar area of Uri in Baramulla district.

Police have already constituted a special investigation teamto probe the case on fast-track basis.

Meanwhile, clashes erupted outside Bemina Degree College andAmar Singh College in Gogji Bagh here after the students staged protestsagainst the incident.

An eyewitness said students of Amar Singh College stagedmassive protests inside the campus and tried to move outside. However, thepolice deployed in the area didn’t allow them to come outside, triggeringclashes.

“The students resorted to stone pelting on the police frominside the campus. The police responded by lobbing tear gas shells inside thecollege campus,” said a college official.

He said the clashes lasted for more than one hour even asthe college authorities were trying to pacify the students.

Later, the situation was bought under control with theintervention of the college authorities.

Similarly, clashes erupted near Bemina Degree Collegebetween students and J&K Police after the campus erupted in protest.

Students of Government Degree College Kangan also staged apeaceful protest and assembled inside the college premises, demanding capitalpunishment for the accused.

The students carried out a peaceful protest march towardsmain chowk Kangan and staged a sit-in.

Amid slogans in favour of the victim, the students demandedstern punishment to the accused. Later, the students dispersed off peacefullyand returned to the classes.
