Baramulla villages decry supply of contaminated water

Residents of Nowpora and Shrakwara villages here on Friday complained that the authorities were supplying contaminated drinking water to the areas for the past several days.

Many residents said the water supply they receive through taps was reddish in colour with a pungent smell.

“It is not fit for drinking at all and can lead to health problems,” said a local.

Another resident said they took up the matter with the authorities at Jal Shakti department, but to no avail.

“We are now left with no option but to fetch water from streams,” said Muhammad Akbar, a resident of Nowpora.

Farooq Ahmad, another resident said following recent rainfall, the quality of the tap water has further deteriorated.

“It seems the water is being supplied directly from the source without filtration,” he said.

The locals appealed to Deputy Commissioner Baramulla to look into the matter and ensure they get safe drinking water.
