Campaign against women harassment in public transport

District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), Budgam in collaboration with ARTO Office Budgam today celebrated 5th UN Global Road Safety Week 2019 at District Court Complex Budgam.

On the occasion DLSA Budgam launched a campaign againstwomen harassment in public transport. In this regard a daylong programme titled’Speak Up against Women Harassment in Public Transport’ was started.

   

The programme was presided over by Chairman DLSA Budgam,Principal District Session Judge Raja Shujaat Ali was held on the occasion. Theprogramme was attended DLSA Secretary, Tabasum Qadir Parray , Munsif JudgeBudgam, ARTO Budgam, Mubashir Jan, Dy. Sp Headquarter Feroz Yehya, Dy.SPTraffic Rural Baba, representatives from JKSRTC, Kashmir Road SafetyFoundation, Sociokers Support Network and Sunrise in Kashmir, Bar members,senior and junior lawyers, teachers and students from different schools.  

Chairman DLSA Budgam, Raja Shujaat Ali inaugurated 15 LegalLiteracy Clubs and Road Safety Clubs at 15 educational institutions comprisingfive Degree Colleges and eight Higher Secondary Schools across Budgam.

While speaking on the occasion, the Chairman DLSA emphasizedon following traffic norms and rules. He spoke at length on the complaints ofwomen harassment in public transport and spoke about measures and laws againstthe women harassment. He stressed on generating awareness about traffic normsand teaching people about the sensitivities of breaking traffic norms. He saidthat J&K was worst hit so far as the traffic rules violation is concernedand said 914 persons died while as over 7500 were injured in 5974 roadaccidents in 2018.

Secretary DLSA, Tabasum Qadir Parray while speaking on theoccasion elaborated on the opening of legal literacy clubs and road safetyclubs in the district. She said that DLSA Budgam will remain in constant touchwith the teachers at these clubs and conduct weekly programmes for students toaware them about different issues and topics. On the occasion DLSA distributedstudy material among the teachers and students for these clubs.

ARTO Budgam also spoke on the occasion who stressed onadding ladies buses to different routes to curb women harassments.

The DLSA Budgam also organized a small walk, led by itschairman with other participants including lawyers, teachers and schoolchildren holding placards as awareness generation on road safety from CourtComplex to outside gate on the occasion.
