CASO in Kupwara, Internet snapped, educational institutions closed

Government forces on Thursday launched a cordon-and-search operation (CASO) in Shatgund village of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district following inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

A police official said a joint team of army and SOG of the Jammu and Kashmir Police cordoned off Shatgund Bala in Qalamabad area at around 2:30 am.

He said that some speculative shots were fired by the forces during the search operation.

SP Handwara Ashish Mishra said the operation was launched following inputs about the presence of some militants in the area, reported GNS news agency.

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended the mobile Internet service and closed the educational institutions in the area.

“All the schools and colleges in Kupwara district except Machhil, Keran and Tangdhar will remain closed today,” said an official of the district administration.

The decision, he said, has been taken as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
