Crackdown on JeI activists continues

The crackdown by forces on members of Jamaat-e-Islami and other religious organisations in Kashmir continued for the second consecutive day Sunday, with dozens of more leaders being detained during nocturnal raids, a source said.

The source told Greater Kashmir that joint teams of army, para-military forces and special operations group of Jammu and Kashmir police are conducting raids to detain religious leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami. 

   

“They were lodged in local police stations,” the source said.

Those detained include the Hurriyat Conference (G) leader GhulamNabiSumji, who was picked up from his Bijbehara residence in Anantnag district during Saturday night. The vice-president of Jamiat-e-Ahlihadees, Jammu and Kashmir, MoulanaMushtaq Ahmad Veeri of Bijbehara was also detained by the police from his residence last night.  Veeri is a preacher at JamiaAhl-e-HadeesSherbagh, Anantnag. Peoples League chairman MukhtarWaza from Kadipora, Anantnag, was also detained. Besides, 15 more Jamaat-e-Islami activists were detained in overnight raids in Anantnag district. These include Gulzar Shah of Bijbehara town, who runs a public school, GhulamRasoolBhat of Sangam, Muhammad Shaban Dar of Marhama, Showkat Ahmad Baba of KhiramBijbehara, ShakirParrayof  DuriporaKhiram and Shahid Ahmad of Khiram.

Similar reports poured in from Kulgam district.

Around 20 Jamaat members, associate members, affiliates and even some sympathisers were detained in Kulgam and its adjoining areas.

These include Abdul Gafar of Redwani, many members from Frisal, Buchroo, Yaripora, Bugam, Bolosoo, Kujar and other areas.

In Shopian and Pulwama districts, the police detained at least 25 persons, including 15 Jamaat activists. 15 persons including five Jamaat activists were detained from Shopian district and 10 from Pulwama district during overnight raids. A police official, who did not wish to be named, identified five detained Jamaat activists from Shopian as Abdul Ahad Kumar of Trenz, Abdur Rashid Pall  of AloorahImamsahab, Abdul Aziz Bhat of DK Pora, Parvez Ahmad Bhat of Keegam and  Muhammad YousfBhat of LaddiImamsahab.

Another police official identified 10 Jamaat-e-Islamia activists detained from Pulwama as AbdurRehman Mir of Litter, Ghulam Muhammad Pal of NowporaPayeen, Manzoor Ahmad Andrabi and Khurshid Ahmad Najar (both from Drabgam), Aqib Rashid Bhat, Jehangir Ahmad Wagay (both from C.B Nath), QaziZakirHussain, Iqbal Bashir (both from Rajpora), Sonaullah Mir of NowporaPayeen and Rayees Ahmad Wani of Bhatnoor. Local residents from both the districts said the sudden arrests of people, particularly Jamaat activists, have created panic among the residents. In Tral, Bashir Ahmad Rather, brother of Peoples League member Nisar Ahmad Rather, was detained during late night from his residence at Dadsara, Tral.  Other detained persons include Shahnawaz Nadvi of Mandoora Tral and Aijaz Ahmed of NoorporaTral. More than 150 people, mostly from Jamaat, were already detained by the police in a massive crackdown during the intervening night of February 22-23.
