Cry for death penalty to guilty in Kathua case gets louder

Dozens of organizations on Wednesday staged protests in Srinagar to demand death penalty to those responsible for gangrape-and-murder of eight-year-old girl in Kathua.

Scores of students, lawyers, members of civil society staged separate demonstrations at Press Enclave to demand fast-tracking of the case and death penalty to the guilty.

“We want to be the part of campaign seeking death penalty to the rapists and murderers of eight year old Kathua victim. I think everyone should join this campaign for the larger interest of society,” said Menaal, a female student.

The eight-year-old from a minority nomadic community had disappeared from near her home in a village near Kathua in Jammu region on January 10.

Her body was found in the same area a week later.

The state police’s Crime Branch, which probed the case, filed a main chargesheet against seven persons and a separate chargesheet against a juvenile in a court in Kathua district last week.

The chargesheet revealed chilling details about how the girl was allegedly kidnapped, drugged and raped inside a place of worship before being killed.
