The District Development Council (DDC) members of Apni Party Friday said Shopian has not only been hit by snowfall but a disaster that has completely halted normal life in the south Kashmir district.
A statement of Apni Party issued here quoted the newly-elected DDC members of the party while addressing a news conference as urging the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha that the government should immediately declare Shopian a disaster-hit district wherein whole system had collapsed due to unprecedented snowfall for the past few days.
“The government must take immediate measures to resume life in Shopian which is completely paralysed since day one of snowfall. The district administration in Shopian is not able to tackle the situation and seem helpless,” the Apni Party DDC members said in the statement. “The district has been badly hit by snow and all the villages and far-flung areas are still virtually cut off from district headquarters.”
They said that people had elected them with lots of aspirations and this was the time when the DDC representatives should help on ground but had not been given authority in decision-making and taking action against the officers who do not help in resolving genuine public grievances.
“The response of the officials in the current catastrophe is poor as they know we are still out of the domain of the administration,” an Apni Party DDC member said in the statement.
