In a joint statement, they said, “The panic escalated sinceKashmir was already tense for the past few days after the Centre ordered thedeployment of 100 companies in the Valley. Massive build-up of security forces, curtailment of Amarnath Yatra and unprecedented advisories issued to tourists, yatris and other civilians created an atmosphere of heightened insecurity and fearand gave rise to speculations about some major decision regarding the state’sspecial status in the offing.”

“Even during the peak of militancy, Amarnath Yatra was nevercancelled, tourists had been never driven out and panic was never allowedunchecked on the streets of the Valley. Why were more forces rushed to Kashmirwhen the government was claiming that the situation on the ground has improvedsince last year?” the leaders said.

They added that although Parliament is in session, thecentral government has issued no statement and nor have political parties inthe state been taken into confidence, fuelling apprehensions.

They also appealed to the people of Jammu, Kashmir andLadakh to remain united. “Under these tiring circumstances, it becomes the dutyof every citizen to safeguard age-old traditions of tolerance. We also appealto the people that whatsoever happens, we should protect those thousands ofoutside state laborers, who have come here to earn their livelihood and areworking across the length and breadth of the Valley,” they said.
