ECI announces LC poll schedule

Three days after the polls to four Rajya Sabha seats of Jammu and Kashmir concluded, the Election Commission of India Tuesday announced the schedule for election to 11 seats of the State’s Legislative Council. The election will be held on March 2.

An ECI spokesman said the notification for holding the polls to 11 seats will be issued on February 12. He said February 18 is the last date for filing nomination papers while scrutiny of nominations will be taken up on February 19.

“February 21 is last date for withdrawal of nominations while voting and counting will take place on March 02,” the spokesman added.

Of the 11 seats, eight vacancies have fallen (or are falling) vacant due to completion of the  term by the members. Three other seats have fallen vacant after the election of three members to the Legislative Assembly on December 23.

According to sources, seven notifications will be issued for 11 seats. While separate notifications will be issued for three seats recently vacated, there will be two separate notification for two berths of Ladakh and Kargil regions and one notification for four seats of Jammu province.

“There will be only one notification for two seats of Kashmir province,” they said.

Going by the numbers, PDP-BJP combine is safe on nine seats while National Conference- Congress combine would easily bag one seat.

“Tough contest is expected on one seat of Kashmir province,” they disclosed, adding that MLAs of smaller parties and independents can play in crucial role in deciding outcome of the seat.
