EJAC calls for pen-down strike, protests on Feb 22

The Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC), a grouping of several employee associations, on Tuesday announced a pen-down strike and protests on 22 February across the state against attacks on Kashmiris in Jammu and some other states.

EJAC acting president Fayaz Ahmad Shabnum said that the association has also taken Jammu employees on board before announcing the programme.

“We urge all government employees to make this pen-down and protests successful. Jammu employees have also agreed to be the part of this pen-down strike and protests,” he said.

Shabnum said that most of the Durbar move employees and their families are on the verge of starvation as the police allowed no supply of essential commodities to their residential quarters.

Quoting a few Durbar move employees, he said: “The milkman who used to supply milk every day to their quarters was stopped at the entrance of quarters on the pretext that curfew was in force.” He said “no person was arrested in Jammu for committing violence and arson.”

“Not a single case has been registered. The offenders are roaming free and continuously committing offences without any fear of law,” he added. He said that EJAC condemn the harassment to Kashmiri students and demand its immediate end. “We demand revocation of cases registered against all Kashmiri students in the past few days.”

He questioned the effectiveness of liaison officers appointed by the state government to help the students studying in outside colleges. “What have they done? Kashmiri students are still under threat, intimated and beaten. State machinery is doing nothing except issuing statements of assurances,” he said.

Shabnum said that executive body of EJAC would again meet on February 22 evening. “In case there is no end to the all this, we will chalk out the future strategy on how to play decisive role for the protection of Durbar move employees, students and other persons putting up in Jammu and outside,” he said.
