The site of his two baby daughters, aged 2 and 3, sitting lost by his body while mourners recited funeral prayers for 27-year-old Aiaz Ahmad Bhat could burst your heart with infinite grief.

Bhat, a smalltime shopkeeper was killed in army firing on Monday evening in his native village, Akhran Nowpora in Devsar.

His 26-year-old widow, Naeema Akhtar is shocked into total silence, unable to cry or speak.

Their two little daughters -- Deeba, 3 and Aiman, 2 -- numbed and unable to comprehend what had happened, lay sitting next to their father’s body wrapped in a green flag with Islamic verses written on it in embroidery.

The babies are looking up at standing adult mourners around the body in the local Eidgah, silent, with a million questions in their eyes.

Bhat is also survived by his parents, a younger brother and two school going sisters.

“O my son who will take care of us now,” uttered Bhat’s wailing mother as his body was taken for last rites.

As people stood up to offer funeral prayers the little girls appeared as if eager to protect their father from being taken away. They were seen hugging and kissing the body as mourners broke down at the heart-wrenching site.

Bhat, according to his relatives had gone to his in-laws house along with his wife and kids for Eid celebrations.

“He went there on second day of Eid and was returning home when he was shot dead by army,” said one of his relatives.

His funeral prayers were attended by thousands of sobbing mourners, as Kulgam district remained shut.
