Felling of trees for Zojila Tunnel is environmental disaster: Hakeem Yaseen

Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) Chairman Hakeem Yaseen Saturday expressed concern over the wanton destruction of forests by felling of hundreds of pine trees by a private company assigned the construction of 14.5-km long Zojilla Tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh highway.

A statement of PDF issued here said that Yaseen demanded stern action against the construction company and expressed concern over the clandestine felling of hundreds of pine trees in Nilgrath area   allegedly by the Mega Engineering and Infrastructure Company Limited in the garb of construction of Zojila Tunnel.

He said, most shockingly, the construction company had not even bothered to inform the Forest authorities while the local forest officers on duty had not taken any preventive measures until the company mercilessly felled the hundreds of pine trees in the area.

The statement quoted Yaseen as demanding stern action under law not only against the construction company for playing the spoilsport but also against the local forest authorities who had failed in doing their duty of protecting the forests.
