Few hours of rain exposes claims of flood preparedness: Tarigami

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami, claimed that a few hours of downpour on Thursday once again exposed the hollow claims of flood preparedness in Kashmir.

“A spell of heavy showers in the morning causedwater-logging in several places in the Valley and the capital Srinagar city aswell. Several localities in the city were submerged,” Tarigami said.

He added, “Veshu Nallah in Kulgam district needs immediateflood-control measures to mitigate the threat downstream. To reduce thevelocity of floodwaters and slow down, and stagger the flood peak of the Nallahduring high magnitude floods which results in the flooding of the south Kashmirand downstream, it is necessary to take appropriate measures.”

He asserted that it is important to identify variousengineering and non-engineering measures to reduce the risk for short-term andlong-term flood mitigation in Kulgam district.
