Ganderbal areas shut for 2nd day to mourn militant’s killing

A shutdown was observed on Monday in several parts of Kangan and Ganderbal towns of central Kashmir for the second straight day to mourn the killing of M. Tech student-turned-militant Rahil Rashid Sheikh of Nunar.

All the shops and other business establishments incommercial hubs like Kangan, Beehama and Duderhama remained closed while publictransport was off the roads.

   

However, private vehicles were plying normally onSrinagar-Leh highway passing through Kangan, Lar and Manigam areas.

Forces had been deployed at many places in order to thwartany protests.

People continued to visit the home of the slain militant inNunar to express condolences with his family.

The district administration closed Government Degree Collegeand Government Higher Secondary schools at Ganderbal and Nunar to prevent anystudent protests against the militant’s killing.

Rahil had reportedly joined Hizbul Mujahideen militantoutfit on April 3 and was killed along with an associate during a gunfight withgovernment forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on April 6.

Internet services in the district were restored on Sundayevening after remaining closed for two days.
