Accused held; residents protest, seek stern punishment
Pulwama, Dec 19: Protests rocked Wanpora village in Pulwama district against the rape and murder of a girl who was missing for last several days. Police have arrested the accused, a tipper driver, and registered a case for kidnapping and killing the girl.
The girl, a resident of Wanpora, went missing on November 26 when she was returning to her home from a pencil factory in Wakhoo Kakapora where she worked.
A pal of gloom descended the whole village when police informed her family that her body has been recovered from agriculture fields near railway line in Khanday Colony Nowgam.
Residents including men, women and children assembled on Srinagar-Pulwama road and protested against the murder. They staged a sit-in on the road for the whole day. They were demanding stern action against the accused person.
Although the tehsildar and SSP Pulwama tried to pacify them but they refused to call off the protests till the accused was punished.
“She was a minor girl but she was kidnapped, raped and then killed in cold blood by the killer driver,” Rafiq Ahmad, a local youth told Greater Kashmir.
“The accused should be punished to the extent that everybody should fear to even think of such act,” he added.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, father of the deceased girl said, “My daughter was working in a pencil factory in Wakhoo Kakapora Pulwama. There was pick and drop facility for her but on the dark day when she did not come home, we reached the village and enquired about her. Two local women and her associate girls informed us that she boarded a tipper driven by Zahoor Ahmad, a driver from Budgam. They also informed us that there were two more women in the tipper and the driver called my daughter by name saying he would drop her to home.”
He said the accused has raped and later murdered her.
“When we enquired further we came to know that he was accompanied by another person. Then we located the driver but he said that he had no information about her.
Later we informed the police next morning. Police investigated the matter and brought most of the drivers to police station but lastly they informed us yesterday that she has been killed and her body was recovered,” he said.
Talking to media at a press conference, SSP Pulwama Tejinder Singh said that the culprit has been arrested and he has accepted that he kidnapped, raped and killed the girl.
While giving details, he said, “On November 27 the parents came to police station and informed that their daughter had been kidnapped. They also expressed doubt on a driver Zahoor Ahmad Bhat son of Muhammad Sultan, resident of Kazura Budgam”.
“We started investigations after lodging a kidnapping case in this regard and many drivers were called to police station for questioning. We were provided some leads by the eye witnesses including some girls who were working with the deceased. Some days ago we arrested Zahoor Ahmad and during interrogation he revealed that he kidnapped the girl, then raped her and killed her to hide the act,” the SSP said.
“He then showed us the place in Khanday Mohalla Nowgam near railway track where the accused had kept the dead body. He had put stones and grass on the body which was in a decomposed state,” Tejinder said.
“We later added murder case against the accused and we are waiting for the post mortem report to confirm cause of death and to ascertain whether she was raped so that we can add another case against the accused,” SSP added.
