Grenade hurled at PDP MLA's house in Shopian

The policemen deployed for security duty fired several rounds in the air following the blast that created panic in the village.

Suspected militants on Thursday lobbed a grenade towards residence of a legislator of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in Shopian district.

A source said that the grenade was hurled at the residence of MLA Wachi, Aijaz Mir, in Zainapora village at about 5 pm. “The grenade landed in the premises near the security picket, outside the house, and exploded,” he said, adding that there was no report of any damage to life or the property.

The policemen deployed for security duty fired several rounds in the air following the blast that created panic in the village.

Soon after the incident, government forces rushed to the spot and conducted searches.

When contacted, MLA Wachi Aijaz Mir said: “I am in Srinagar but my family members were present in the house at the time of the incident.”

“The grenade was hurled towards the security picket which is about 200 meters from my house and fortunately there was no damage to life or property,” Mir told Greater Kashmir.

Senior superintendent of police Shopian said that no damage was caused due to the “mysterious blast”.

“It was a mysterious blast. We are ascertaining what happened actually. No damage has been reported. But security men posted there have fired several round in air,” he said.
