Sources said, “Scores of locals, including men, women and children are trapped in a local Masjid where a religious function was on when the gunfight broke out.”

An encounter broke out between militants and forces at NyainaBatpora here in south Kashmir on late Tuesday evening.

Police sources said that a joint party of Special Operations Group (SOG) paramilitary CRPF and 55 Rashtriya Rifles cordoned off Batpora village this evening and launched searches. “During search operation some militants present in the village fired on forces and tried to break the cordon. However, fire was retaliated triggering an encounter,” sources added.

Sources said, “Scores of locals, including men, women and children are trapped in a local Masjid where a religious function was on when the gunfight broke out.”

While talking to Greater Kashmir a top police officer said, "During search operation militants fired a few shots and went in hiding. We have sealed the village and search operations are on. People trapped in the Masjid will be evacuated soon.”
