Handwara PHE daily wager’s son shines in 12th exam, bags 5th rank in Science stream

Nazimul Islam, the son of a PHE daily wager Ghulam Muhammad from Kultoora village of Kupwara brought laurels to the entire district by securing 5th position with 495 marks in the 12th class annual exams.

Islam, who comes from a poor family, did his schooling from government institutions.

He passed his matriculation from Government Boys High School Guloora with 474 marks and 12th from Government Boys Higher Secondary School Handwara.

“Studying in a private institution in Kashmir is overrated. If you have the will power and dedication, things can be achieved in government schools as well,” Islam said.

Due to financial problems, he could not take tuition in any coaching centre and focused on self study.

Islam said that after passing his 10th class, he went to a private coaching centre to enroll himself but coming to know about the hefty fee they charged, he dropped the idea.

“My mother told me that my father gets a meager salary Rs 6000 per month from which we hardly manage essential commodities,” he said.

Islam said staying away from social media was a game changer for him.

“My friends would taunt me for not being on social media but I knew the consequences of being attached to it,” he said. “I only took advantage of YouTube videos to get my doubts cleared and would study eight to 10 hours every day.”

Islam, who had opted for Mathematics as optional subject, secured 100 marks in English, Physics and Math. In Chemistry he scored 97 and 98 in Geology.

He dreams of becoming an IITian and is preparing for JEE Advance.

“I want to do something extraordinary, nothing less than qualifying the Union Public Service Commission exams so that my parents who have seen abject poverty can live a happy and prosperous life,” Islam said.

He credited his teachers and parents for his success.

Meanwhile, the school management of the Government Boys Higher Secondary School Handwara held a felicitation ceremony for Islam on Monday and principal of the school Muhammad Rafiq while wishing him luck said that Islam had brought laurels to the school.
