Handwara PHE multi-crore scam

The High Court on Thursday sought government’s report on departmental inquiry against the delinquent officials in multi-crore scam in public health engineering division, Handwara of Kupwara district.     

A bench of Justice Ali Muhammad Magrey and Justice MK Hanjura directed commissioner secretary public health engineering and irrigation and flood control department to conclude the inquiry against the erring officials involved in scam.

   

The crime branch has already concluded the probe into the scam and has filed charge-sheet in the competent court against the officials it has indicted in the scam.   

 In December 2014, the High Court had directed SSP Crime Branch here to file status about the investigation of the case (FIR no 91/2014) which was registered at Police Station Handwara and transferred to Crime Branch, Srinagar subsequently. 

The court had also ordered the Commissioner Secretary PHE and I&FC to file his status report about the departmental enquiry initiated against the delinquent officials. 

A multi-crore scam was unearthed in PHE department of Handwara Division in 2014 and the preliminary investigation has revealed that that water schemes for Mawar, Monabal, Ramhal and Zakhsondri areas of Langate and Handwara existed only on papers while on ground no water pipes were laid in these areas.

 The investigation has revealed that crores of rupees were illegally withdrawn by the officials but were never used for any works in the Handwara.
