Handwara villagers demand removal of red zone status

Residents of Ganie Mohalla here on Wednesday expressed resentment for continued red zone restrictions in the area for past more than a month.

People alleged they were suffering due to the restrictions. “Our village consists of 30 households and majority of people belong to labour class. Due to strict restrictions we are unable to earn livelihood which has badly hit our lives,” said Saqib Rasheed Ganie, a local.

Another local Abdul Ahad Ganie said for the last 22 days not a single COVID19 case has been reported from the village. “But for unknown reasons we have been kept under restrictions and made to suffer,” he said.

Residents alleged barring Tehsildar no official has visited the locality all these days to review supply of essentials.

“We don’t have even the bare minimum facilities which are supposed to be kept available to people in red zones,” said another local.

As the harvesting season is approaching, people demanded the authorities should lift the curbs at earliest to allow them to resume normal life.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, Handwara Nazir Ahmad said recommendations for de-notifying the village as red zone have been sent to Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Anshul Garg.
