Highlight plight of political detainees: Sehrai

Tehreek-e-Hurriyat  (TeH) chairman Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai today expressed serious concern over the plight of Kashmiri political  detainees lodged in various jails in and outside Jammu and Kashmir.

“Condition of Kashmiri political detainees in jails is very disturbing. Incarcerated woman leader and her associates, who are languishing in Tihar Jail, New Delhi, have been kept in solitary confinement and are meted out ill-treatment by the jail authorities,” Sehrai said in a statement.

He urged the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), civil society, Bar Association and human rights organisations to highlight the plight of Kashmiri political prisoners and garner support from international community for a solving this human issue.

“The treatment meted out to Kashmiri detainees and under trials right from the time they enter these jails is inhuman. It is aimed to break their will and determination and affect them psychologically. Aasiya Andrabi is already suffering from multiple ailments and has been now kept in a solitary confinement which is nothing but a sheer political vendetta,” Sehrai said.

He expressed grave concern over what he said, “use of administrative detention without charges, trial or right to defense.”

“We appeal to Indian and international human rights organizations including Amnesty International, Asia watch and ICRC to get a firsthand account of this pathetic situation of Kashmiri prisoners by on spot inspection of jails and use their offices to ensure release of these detainees,” he added.
