Highway re-opens for LMVs

The Srinagar-Jammu highway, which was closed for traffic for the past three days, re-opened on Friday evening for light motor vehicles, officials said.

Inspector general of traffic police Alok Kumar told Greater Kashmir that traffic on the highway has been restored but only LMVs are being allowed towards Srinagar.

“Only LMVs can pass Maroog and widening is underway,” Kumar said.

He said they are hopeful that widening will be completed on Saturday morning.

“On Saturday, we will first clear stranded traffic and later vehicles will also ply from Jammu to Srinagar,” he said.

The IGP asked highway travelers to contact traffic control units on Saturday to know about the status of the road.

Meanwhile, divisional administration Kashmir issued a fresh avalanche warning in nine avalanche-prone districts—Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kargil and Leh.

Deputy commissioners of these districts have been asked to advise the people not to venture out.

Meanwhile, three persons were killed and another injured after being hit by landslides in Poonch and Reasi districts of Jammu.

Poonch senior superintendent of police Ramesh Angral said that an avalanche hit a Tata vehicle, which was traveling to Mandi town of Poonch district on Thursday, killing Makhan Singh son of Romesh, a resident of Akhnoor, Jammu, on the spot.

The vehicle was severely damaged. During the rescue carried out by local residents and police, two other occupants of the vehicle, Anjum Parvez son of Parvez Khan, a resident of Surankote, and Deepak Singh son of Darshan Singh, a resident of RS Pura, Jammu, were rushed to the SDH Poonch and given first aid.

However, Anjum succumbed to his injuries. Deepak was referred to Jammu hospital where his condition is stated to be critical, the police said.

Moreover, Murtaza son of Shabir Ahmed, 3, was buried under a landslide right outside his home, where he was playing, in Lar village of Reasi district on Thursday evening. The local residents retrieved his body from the debris.
