Highway re-opens, weatherman forecasts rain, snow from Sunday

The Srinagar-Jammu highway was re-opened for traffic on Thursday afternoon, even as meteorological department predicted another spell of snow and rain from Sunday for two days.

The highway, the only surface link between Kashmir and rest of the world, was closed again for traffic on Wednesday due to a fresh landslide in Ramsoo belt of Ramban district, officials said.

“The road was opened today afternoon after a massive landslide was cleared at Moompassi area of Ramban district,” inspector general of traffic police Alok Kumar told Greater Kashmir.

Kumar said that for now, the traffic police were clearing the stranded vehicles.

On Friday, traffic will move from Srinagar to Jammu.

Meanwhile, another western disturbance is approaching Kashmir, which would cause rain in plains and snow in higher reaches for two days from Sunday, MeT director Sonam Lotus said.
