Highway reopens, weather improves

The Srinagar-Jammu highway was reopened for traffic on Friday. The road had been closed after fresh landslides and shooting stones along it on Thursday evening. 

“The road was reopened Friday afternoon and the stranded traffic was allowed,” superintendent of traffic, (Rural), Muzaffer Ahmad Shah told Greater Kashmir.  He said about 2000 vehicles were stranded on the road.

   

About allowing the traffic on Saturday, he said, it will be decided tomorrow morning. “People can call the Traffic Control Units of Srinagar and Jammu to know the status of the highway,” he said.

Meanwhile, the weather in Kashmir improved significantly on Friday even as the metrological department predicted light rain/snow at scattered places in the state in next 24 hours.

MeT officials said that minimum temperature in Srinagar was zero degree Celsius on Friday while it was minus 2.6 and minus 6.2 degree in Pahalgam and Gulmarg, respectively.

In Ladakh division, Leh town recorded minus 4.4, Kargil minus 14.4 and Drass minus 11.8 degree as the minimum temperature.

Jammu city recorded a minimum 10.5, Katra town 9.5, Batote 1.8, both Bannihal and Bhaderwah 0.4 degree night temperatures.
