The body of a Pulwama resident was found riddled with bullets Thursday morning in a village in the southern Kashmir district, residents and police said.
Zahoor Ahmad Sheikh was the brother of an active militant of the Hizbul Mujahideen group, Irfan Ahmad.
His body was found by the Chowkidar of a government-run school inside its building in Naira village some four kilometers from Pulwama town around 9:30am.
Soon after the body was discovered, villagers rushed to the spot to see the body of Sheikh who was missing since later Wednesday evening.
Sheikh ran a shop in the village.
Witnesses said scores of villagers later marched towards the district Deputy Commissioner’s office carrying the corpse, demanding a probe into the mysterious killing.
“They, however, were intercepted by police near Rangmulla bridge after which some youth pelted them (police) with stones”, an eyewitnesses said, adding police responded by firing tear smoke shells to disperse the angry villagers.
Senior Superintendent of Police Chandan Kohli told Greater Kashmir that police registered a case and started investigation into Sheikh’s killing.
Authorities suspended cellular internet service in the area to prevent mobilisation of protestors.
