Houses damaged in landslides, B’la families seek rehabilitation

Several families whose houses were damaged in the landslides in Lateefabad village here demanded their rehabilitation on Tuesday.

Four residential houses and three cowsheds were damaged bythe landslides on Saturday night.

   

“We have become homeless. We have no source of income toconstruct new house. We appeal to the authorities to provide us monetary helpto rebuild our homes,” said Nazir Ahmad Chechi.

On Friday afternoon, following the incessant rains, panicgripped the village as there were reports of landslide in orchards and someother areas.

On Saturday night, the residential houses, which werealready abandoned by the families, collapsed.

The area has long history of landslides and land erosion.The landslides have inflicted huge loss to the village during the last twodecades.

Earlier, the authorities had proposed rehabilitation ofpeople living in vulnerable areas. However, the proposal was not implemented.

The slides prone villages in kandi belt of the districtinclude, Chandoosa, Lateefabad, Khodpora, Kawhar, Shumlaran, Rajapora,Thandakasi and Laridora.

“There is prediction of more rains for coming days and hencethe threat of the landslides. We appeal to the district administration to finda permanent solution to our problem,” said Ali Muhammad of Khodpora Kandi.

Tehsildar Baramulla, Safia Abdullah, said the affectedfamilies have been shifted to a school and a forest department hut.
