I&FC deptt ‘expedites’ repair work on Jhelum embankment

The Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department on Sunday has expedited the work to repair damaged portion of embankment of river Jhelum here, officials said.

Chief Engineer I&FC, Shahnawaz Shah said the contractorhas been given the ultimatum to complete the work in 12 days.

   

“Additional men and machinery has been pressed into serviceto complete the work,” he said.

On Sunday, Greater Kashmir reported that the repair work hasbeen shelved for many months.

“Appropriate action under rules will be initiated in casethere is further delay or negligence,” the Chief Engineer said.

Many resident of Shivpora locality here said the work hasbeen expedited. “We hope the work will be completed soon,” said a local.

As reported earlier, the rising water level in Jhelum onSaturday overflowed the damaged embankment at Shivpora, leading to panic amonglocals.

In January this year, around 70 meter long embankment hadcaved in near Yatoo Mohalla while the entire blacktop laid over it was washedaway by overflowing Jhelum.
