Incessant rains trigger fears of landslides in Baramulla villages

Panic gripped residents of Lateefabad village in Kandi area of this district on Friday after incessant rains led to fears of landslides.

Locals said at several places, patches of land started toerode, leading to fear and inflicting huge damage to orchards threat of damageto several residential houses.

   

“At many places wide cracks have developed which are nowgrowing with each passing day,” said Fayaz Ahmad, a resident of Lateefabad.

Locals said if the rainfall continued for few more days, itwill prove devastating for the area. They urged authorities to send a team ofofficials and start immediate rehabilitation of the affected people.

“We are living in extreme fear. Keeping in view the weathercondition, the entire area comprising dozens of villages need to be evacuatedor at least authorities should monitor the situation closely” said AbdulRashid, another local.

The area has long history of landslides and land erosion.Earlier, the authorities had suggested rehabilitation of people of these slidesprone area. However, the proposal was not implemented by the authorities forunknown reasons.

The Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, GN Itoo said he hasdirected revenue officials to immediately shift the affected families.

“These families will be shifted to a nearest highersecondary school. A team of revenue officials is already working in thisdirection. We are monitoring situation. If need arises we will be shifting allthe families to safer places” said Itoo.
