Police and Army said that they are ready to meet any challenge and every step has been taken to ensure peace.

 Security has been beefed up across Kashmir, especially in Srinagar to thwart any militant attacks ahead of January 26 and the visit of the US President Barack Obama to India.

Hundreds of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in Srinagar and other towns of Kashmir to thwart any untoward incident. The security around sensitive installations has been beefed up.

In Srinagar and other towns of Kashmir, police and paramilitary forces have erected special check points at roads and are carrying out frisking of the vehicles.

In the Srinagar the checkpoints have been erected at several places that included Bemina, Parimpora, Lal Chowk, Jahangir Chowk, Pantha Chowk, M A Road, Soura and several other places.

The areas around Bakhshi stadium has been turned into fortress. Sharp shooters have been deployed on high rise buildings, the main venue of January 26 function in Kashmir.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Abdul Ghani Mir told Greater Kashmir: “ We are confident of tackling every challenge and have been working towards conduct of functions without any incident,” IGP said adding that all the arrangements have been put in place. “JK Police and other security agencies are working round the clock to ensure security of  Republic Day functions across Kashmir,” IGP added.  

Almost all separatists including leaders of different factions of Hurriyat Conference have called for observance of "black day" on January 26 to press for early resolution of Kashmir issue.

Meanwhile General Officer Commanding 15 Corps, Lt General Subrata Saha told reporters that all necessary precautions have been taken in view of the high profile visit of US President Barack Obama."Adequate care is being taken to foil all nefarious designs in view of the visit of the US President," Lt Gen Saha said.
