J&K colleges perform poorly in latest NAAC ranking

The Degree Colleges of J&K have fallen in rankings after National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) changed its assessment parameters for evaluating the Colleges.

The NAAC peer team was recently on visit to J&K forrenewal and fresh accreditation of the Colleges following which all educationalinstitutes have bagged B and C grade in NAAC ranking.

The Government College for Women, Cluster University MA Roadhere has slipped down from Grade A to Grade B+, in latest accreditation inthird cycle of NAAC evaluation.

During the past two cycles of accreditation the College hadmaintained A Grade in NAAC accreditation. “The basic reason for slipping downfrom A to B+ grade is because of change in assessment criterion by the NAAC,”said Yasmeen Ashai, Principal MA Road College.

“The College was evaluated on basis of achievements done upto June 2017. Whatever has been done in 2018 and 2019 was not considered forNAAC accreditation,” Ashai said who took over in February this year.

She attributed low ranking to failure of authorities to addnew courses and subjects at Undergraduate and Post Graduation level.

“NAAC has stated that there has been very less research inCollege and it has not fetched any State sponsored projects over the years,”she said.

As per new rules, 70% assessment of the Degree College orUniversity is done on basis of Self Study Report (SSR) submitted by theinstitution while 30% evaluation is done by NAAC team physically.

“Earlier SSR comprised of only 50% points and Colleges wouldget good ranking,” an official said.

The overall ranking of MA Road College is 2.69 points out of3 points.  The new accreditation will beeffective from June 2017 to June 2022.

“The previous accreditation expired in June 2017 but therenewal was delayed up to 2019,” Ashai said.

Meanwhile Gandhi Memorial College Srinagar has got B Grade,Women College Pulwama, GDC Kulgam, GDC Sumbhal has got C Grade while as GDCMagam and GDC Bijbehara has got B grade.

“The NAAC has rejected accreditation of four Degree Colleges in Jammu. The GDC Thana Madni has been awarded C Grade in NAAC accreditation,” an official in higher education department said.

Secretary Higher Education Department Talat Parvez said theColleges across states have slipped down in the rankings after the NAAC changedthe assessment parameters.

He said one of the criteria for ranking was that everyfaculty member should be P.hD. “The NAAC has also evaluated placement cells andother criteria which colleges didn’t know will be assessed,” he said.
