J&K likely to adopt CBSE exam pattern for lower classes

The School Education Department is likely to adopt the CBSE exam pattern for lower classes, from this academic session, to bring improvement in the existing system of exams in the government-run schools.

An official said the department has decided to depute afive-member team of officials to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE),New Delhi for studying the exam practices for the classes from 5 to class 9students, right from the admission process to annual examination.

   

The process will be initiated in consultation with NationalCouncil of Educational Research Training (NCERT).

The officials to be deputed to Delhi include two JointDirectors, Principal State institute of Education (SIE), Academic Officer andAssistant Director, JK Board of School Education (BOSE).

“The team shall submit their report on best model ofexamination of the country viz paper setting, system of evaluation, role andresponsibilities of field functionaries, heads of the institutions and othermodalities,” reads an order issued by Commissioner Secretary, School EducationDepartment, Hirdesh Kumar Singh.

The committee has been asked to submit the report to theDepartment by March 10. An official said the decision to study and adopt theCBSE pattern of exams for lower classes was taken after J&K was reorganizedas Union Territory (UT).

At present, the junior class exams in the government schoolsis conducted at school level under supervision of District Institute ofEducation and Trainings (DIETs) concerned.

Another official said the team has been asked to study thebest exam practice for primary and middle classes and its outcome in terms ofperformance of students.

“It was observed that junior class students perform poorlyin exams and are not able to compete. So the intention is to introduce properexam system while studying the CBSE type of question paper and teachingpractices,” the official said.

In its report, the SIE had highlighted the loopholes in theexisting exam system for junior classes and suggested certain recommendationsto bring improvement.

“Introducing proper exam system in lower classes will provebeneficial for students. The students will get acquainted with the proper examsystem,” the official said.

Commissioner Secretary, School Education Department, HirdeshKumar Singh did not respond to repeated calls for his comment on the issue.
