J&K’s MDM scheme enters WFP report

World Food Programme (WFP) has mentioned Jammu and Kashmir for its Mid-Day Meal (MDM) programme run in the government schools amid COVID-19 outbreak, in its latest report.

The WFP, which is the food-assistance branch of the UN, inits report tracked the response of all states and Union Territories of Indiafor providing school meals to students amid coronavirus outbreak.

   

“States and 2 UTs have started distribution of dry rationsas well as food allowance which include Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya,Mizoram, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir and NCT of Delhi,” reads the WFPreport.

The school education department recently ordered fordistribution two month advance dry ration (rice) among eligible students attheir doorsteps and also to provide cooking cost through DBT into the accountsof the students or their parents.

The decision was taken in wake of the MHRD guidelines to allstate and UTs to provide mid-day meals in schools or dry rations in lieu ofcooked meals or a food security allowance in lieu of mid-day meals to schoolchildren. MHRD directed that the cost of food grains and cooking cost should betransferred to the beneficiary accounts.

The Mid-Day Meal (MDM) is a flagship programme of theGovernment India (GoI) wherein hot cooked meals are provided to governmentschool children from class 1st to 8th.

The main aim behind the step is to enhance the enrollment,retention, and attendance of students in all government schools besidesimproving nutritional levels among students as well.
