Karan Singh hits out at Meghalaya Guv’s ‘boycott Kashmir’ remark

Hitting out at Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy over his statement in which he has asked people to “boycott everything Kashmiri”, senior Congress leader Dr Karan Singh has said it was unfortunate that there are people ready to exploit tragedies.

“Pulwama (attack) was tragedy enough. But it will further deepen the tragedy if people like Shri Roy make these kind of utterly irresponsible and unexpected statements,” Dr Singh said during a debate on a news channel Tuesday evening.

He said: “On one hand we say J&K is an integral part of India and on the other hand high dignitaries (the governor) make statement that we should boycott Kashmiris and Kashmiri goods.”

“It is outrageous and very unfortunate that this sort of anti-Kashmiris wave seems to be coming out from here and there. It is unfortunate that Kashmir students should be harassed in any part of India. I would have thought that in times like this we should overcome our narrow prejudice and try to see the broader pictures,” said Dr Singh. “But there are people who are further ready to deepen the tragedy that we witness.”

He said the general anti-Kashmir feelings that are being “cooked up” were unfortunate. “We have to look this tragedy in broader sense and it doesn’t mean you unleash anti-Kashmir wave in the country. We need to show great deal of statesmanship,” he said.

He asked people to show restraint and sagacity, so that “we don’t get into a position where not only 40 but 40 thousand or four crore people are in danger. We have to be very careful.”

Singh said it was unfair to ostracize whole Kashmir community and branding them as “terrorists” or “anti-nationals”. “It is totally unfair to condemn the whole people, a whole community consisting of almost one crore people in the valley. Condemning them all as terrorists or as anti-nationals, that is not the way to do it. There are certain elements. There is no doubt about it and that’s clear and does not mean you can tarnish a whole community. That’s very unfair,” Singh said.
