Kargil back to normalcy after week-long shutdown, protests over controversial Ladakh order

Life across Kargil district returned to normal on Saturday following the announcement by the Governor that newly carved out Ladakh division will have rotational headquarters between Leh and Kargil districts.

The Ladakh region’s Kargil district was observing shutdown and protests for one week demanding headquarters of the newly created administrative division of Ladakh be made rotational between Leh and Kargil towns.

Reports said all the government offices, including LAHDC Secretariat, DC Office and the district court resumed normal work while as business establishments all over the mountainous district opened and traffic was seen plying in the district.

The joint coordination committee Kargil had asked people to end agitation and resume their normal routine.

Succumbing to the public pressure, the Governor’s administration Friday announced that the newly carved out Ladakh division will have headquarters both at Leh and Kargil.

After parleys between the Governor Satya Pal Malik and the joint Coordination Committee Kargil, the group spearheading the protests for seeking rotational headquarters, the government announced that the division will be headquartered at both Leh and Kargil.

Earlier, the government’s announcement to establish headquarters of the division at Leh had snowballed into a major controversy with people of Kargil protesting against the decision, demanding rotation of headquarters between Leh and Kargil.
